2. Buffy Cloud Comforter: The Softest Comforter We've Ever Tried

We’ve slept with many comforters over the past few years but keep returning to the Buffy Cloud Comforter. Multiple team members have tested this comforter (some since 2022!), and we still use it. We’ve used this comforter with and without a duvet cover, though it will show wear and tear more quickly if it's not protected.

Temperature Regulation

In our experience, it does a great job of regulating temperature, and we’ve never had issues with feeling too hot or cold while lying underneath. The fill is made from recycled PET material, which is nicely breathable. The outside is a sateen lyocell fabric that feels buttery-soft.

We like how easy this comforter is to clean. Simply machine wash it with cold water and hang it to dry. It dries quickly, and we’re happy to report that it holds up great in the wash. We haven’t noticed any fill clumping, and it remains soft and fluffy.

Durable Comfort

We’ve observed slight wear and tear that comes with regular use, but given how often we use it, it has held up phenomenally. We also think this is an excellent option for year-round use, as it remains a go-to no matter the temperature. It’s not the thickest option on this list, though, which is worth noting if you prefer an ultra-lofty comforter.

  • Fill Material: Recycled PET fill

  • Shell Material: Sateen lyocell

  • Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, king/California king

  • Fill Power: Not applicable

  • Care: Machine wash cold, hang dry

3. Bedsure Duvet Insert Comforter: Affordable Yet Luxurious

I understand it can be challenging to find a quality and budget-friendly comforter, but Bedsure Duvet Insert Comforter offers exceptional value, combining:

This down-alternative comforter has a microfiber shell, which impressed us with its silky smooth feel. Inside, the filling consists of 300 GSM polyester, which has remained evenly distributed throughout our six months of testing.

The overall construction is high-quality but basic. This is a no-frills option that impressed us in terms of:

  • Durability

  • Coziness

It’s lightweight, with a bit less filling than other options, but we liked how breathable the construction is, making it a great year-round pick.

Even after sending this comforter home to a couple with differing temperature preferences, we’re happy to report that this versatile comforter provided a cozy and comfortable night's sleep. We’re impressed with how well the Bedsure Duvet Insert held up throughout our testing, maintaining its:

  • Quality

  • Comfort

We also found it easy to wash with a relatively quick drying time.

  • Fill Material: 300 GSM polyester

  • Shell Material: Microfiber

  • Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, oversized queen, king, California king, oversized king

  • Fill Power: Not applicable

  • Care: Machine wash cold

4. Silk & Snow Down Duvet Insert: Year-Round Cozy Comforter

If you're like many and enjoy using a comforter year-round, the Silk & Snow Down Duvet is a great pick. Users have been using it for five months and found its medium weight is relatively breathable, making it suitable for most sleepers.

This comforter is perfect for transitioning from summer to fall, especially in New York City. It achieves the perfect balance between insulation and temperature regulation.

Certified Comfort

The comforter is not as lofty as other down options on this list, but it feels hefty and durable, like a weighted blanket. They use the all-season weight, but it’s also available in a lightweight version.

The comforter has a cotton shell, which feels thick and smooth. It’s filled with Downmark Certified Canadian Hutterite duck down. The certification guarantees that the product has met quality and manufacturing standards and ensures ethical sourcing.

Comforter Specs

The Silk & Snow Down Duvet also has an impressive 700 fill power, which remains evenly distributed. Like all comforters, you’ll want to fluff it occasionally to prevent flattening.

  • Fill Material: Canadian Hutterite duck down

  • Shell Material: Cotton

  • Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, king/California king

  • Fill Power: 700

  • Care: Spot or dry clean

5. Snowe Lightweight Down Comforter: Perfect for Hot Sleepers

For those seeking an insulating comforter that isn't overly heavy, we highly recommend Snowe's Down Comforter. We tested the lightweight density, which also comes in an all-season version. Filled with RDS-certified white duck down, we love the cloud-like sleeping experience this comforter provides.

Fabric Quality

You’ll find a sumptuous, 330-thread-count cotton sateen fabric on the outside. It’s easy to clean and has shown no changes in quality with repeated washes. Note that this comforter tends to crinkle slightly when adjusting it, but we didn’t find it too much of a nuisance during our testing.

Our tester, a self-proclaimed hot sleeper, loves this comforter for its breathability. We’re huge fans of its breathability and lighter weight, which makes it great for layering or using on its own.

Durability Review

This comforter has been used year-round since 2022, and it’s found impressive with how well it has held up, considering the amount of use it gets. There are zero signs of wear, loss of loft, or discoloration. The occasional feather or two might escape, but this comforter sheds significantly fewer feathers than others we've used for a similar duration.

  • Fill Material: White duck down

  • Shell Material: Cotton sateen

  • Sizes: Full/queen, king

  • Fill Power: 750

  • Care: Machine wash gently with cold water, tumble dry low

6. Egyptian Bedding Goose Down Feather Comforter: Exceptionally Soft and Warm

Made with an Egyptian cotton outer shell, the Egyptian Bedding Comforter is buttery-soft, earning it the softest title on this list. This comforter keeps the user warm after six months of testing, including a brutal Chicago winter. While it was not found stifling in the lab, this product isn’t the most breathable option, as it traps heat at home.

Lofty Design

The baffle-box comforter is filled with 80 percent goose down fiber and 20 percent waterfowl feather fiber. The incredibly lofty comforter maintained its fluffiness throughout the tests, but the fill shifted with movement.

Although it’s one of the least expensive down-filled comforters on this list, the construction is impressive. Its fill is even, the double-stitching is neat, and the comforter fits perfectly into the duvet cover. Aside from corner ties, the comforter features side ties to keep it in place within a cover.

Egyptian Softness

Egyptian cotton also gets softer with time, which is good news considering this comforter is machine washable. Even after consistent use, the Egyptian Bedding Comforter is still in great shape.

  • Fill Material: Goose down

  • Shell Material: Egyptian cotton

  • Sizes: Twin, full, queen, king, California king, palatial king

  • Fill Power: Not listed

  • Care: Machine wash

7. Rest Evercool Cooling Comforter: Great for Hot Sleepers

If you overheat at night, check out the Rest Evercool Cooling Comforter. This unique comforter has some of the most effective cooling and moisture-wicking properties on the market. After six months, the comforter has improved our nightly routine.

It's not very lofty, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how well it keeps the user warm at night, too, even as winter approaches. Cooling isn't its only capability. It’s made with a 90-10 blend of nylon and spandex, which gives it a buttery-smooth, almost slippery feel. The texture is unlike any other comforter (in a good way).

Cool Touch

When lying underneath the comforter during testing, it remained cool to the touch. It retained its original shape after washing, but it’s noticeable that some of the filling, particularly in the large sections, will bunch slightly to the outside edges.

This was a minor drawback, though, as the bunching can be fixed by gently shaking the comforter.

Durability Concerns

The comforter began to show loose strings at the corners and ripped slightly with nightly use. Considering its unmatched temperature regulation properties, we still found it worth purchasing hot sleepers.

  • Fill Material: Sorona fabric

  • Shell Material: 90 percent nylon, 10 percent spandex

  • Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, king/California king

  • Fill Power: Not applicable

  • Care: Machine wash, air dry

8. Cozy Earth Silk Comforter: Luxurious and Smooth

The Cozy Earth Comforter offers a lavish look and texture we couldn’t get enough of in our testing. After six months of testing, we were still blown away by its performance. We think it’s breathable enough to please a variety of sleepers. And during an icy winter, it also kept us nicely cozy.

Known for its luxe smoothness, durability, and natural temperature-regulation properties, silk is one of the most splurge-worthy materials when shopping for bedding. As a hot sleeper, one will love the cool texture of silk pillowcases, and a silk comforter takes that to the next level by enveloping you in the sumptuous fabric.

Silk Quality

The fill and shell of Cozy Earth's comforter are made from 100 percent Mulberry silk, the highest-quality silk on the market. We appreciate that you can opt for a standard or extra-fill amount, depending on your preferences. We tested the standard density, which we found medium-weight and suitable for year-round use (though it did run on the thinner side).

We were impressed by this comforter's quality. It felt sturdy but was easy to move because of its delicate drape. The texture is smooth and slick. The shell is initially cool to the touch but warms up quickly.

Silk Quality

Although this comforter is dry-clean only (and we disliked taking it to the dry cleaners), this type of care tends to be standard with silk bedding. This comforter never failed to impress us, so while it has a high price tag, we think it’s well worth the cost.

  • Fill Material: Mulberry silk

  • Shell Material: Mulberry silk

  • Sizes: Twin, full/queen, king

  • Fill Power: Standard and extra options available

  • Care: Spot or dry clean

9. Casaluna Premium Down Comforter: Heavyweight Warmth for Winter

Whether you live in a colder climate or have an unfortunately drafty apartment like I do, a heavy-duty comforter may be your solution. Bundle every winter with the Casaluna Premium Down Comforter, which offers impressive insulation and ultimate coziness.

This 600-fill power pick is filled with 75 percent white duck down and 25 percent white duck feathers, making it perfect for anyone looking for a warm comforter.

We tested the all-season density, which comes in lightweight and heavyweight densities. The sewn-through construction allowed for evenly dispersed puffs of filling. The mostly downfilling added loft. The outer shell is made from sateen cotton and feels thick and structured.

Movement Restriction

When lying under the insert, we found it was very unwieldy and complex to manipulate when tossing and turning. It was difficult to shift and adjust positions without feeling restricted. That said, the comforter didn't feel overly heavy to sleep under when lying still. It felt more like a weighted blanket, with gentle, pleasant pressure.

Despite this, we didn't overheat, and the comforter felt quite breathable. Throughout the testing period, the fill stayed evenly dispersed, and even after washing the comforter, it maintained its luxe look and texture.

Consistent Durability

We're still huge fans after testing the Casaluna Premium Down Comforter for six months. We find its all-season density perfect. Despite consistent use, it hasn't flattened, and we're impressed with its overall durability.

  • Fill Material: 75 percent white duck down, 25 percent white duck feather

  • Shell Material: Cotton

  • Sizes: Twin, full/queen, king

  • Fill Power: 600

  • Care: Machine wash, tumble dry

10. Quince Premium Down Alternative Comforter: Soft and Breathable

Budget bedding is usually made of low-cost materials with a cheap polyester feel, but this is not true with the Quince Premium Down Alternative Comforter. It looks and feels similar to other more expensive comforters on the market. With a 100% cotton sateen shell, you can’t beat the price and quality.

The Quince comforter resembles a full-priced down comforter rather than a down alternative like the Buffy Cloud. It’s light, airy, and on the thinner side, and the shell feels just like cotton covers found on down duvet inserts. The fill is microfiber, but it doesn’t feel cheap.

Fill Options

The all-season fill option was tested, and the thickness is a happy medium for hot and colder weather. It also has corner loops if you decide to put a cover on it (which is recommended because washing might cause the fill to clump together).

Pros:

  • You save about 50% compared to retail prices

  • Three fill options: lightweight, all-season and ultra-warm

  • Hypo-allergenic microfiber fill and soft 100% cotton sateen cover

Cons:

  • Needs regular fluffing to keep fill even

  • Stuffing may clump together after many washes

Additional details:

  • Fill: Microfibers

  • Shell material: 100% cotton sateen

  • Sizes: Twin, Full/Queen, King/Cal King

  • Care: Machine-wash

  • Trial period: 365-night trial

11. Garnet Hill Essential Down Comforter: Colorful and Cozy

While most down comforters are only available in white and require a duvet cover for some color, the Garnet Hill Essential Down Comforter is durable, well-made, and available in a dozen beautiful, bold colors. This bedding is ready to be used from the packaging; no duvet is needed.

This comforter has only one weight available: warm. While it isn’t as fluffy as the Buffy Cloud Comforter, the premium 100% cotton shell and downfall trap your body heat. If you're a hot sleeper, I would steer clear of this one, but it should work well for average sleepers and those looking for warmer winter bedding.

The Garnet Hill Essential Down Comforter isn’t as soft and fluffy as other options on this list, but if you're a fan of down comforters, you'll likely be a fan of this one.

Pros:

  • Many colors to choose from

  • 100% Responsible Down Standard certified down and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified

  • All-season fill

Cons:

  • Not as soft and fluffy as other options on this list

  • There are no corner loops if you want to use them as an insert

Additional details:

  • Fill: 100% Responsible Down Standard down

  • Shell material: 100% cotton

  • Sizes: Twin, Double/Queen, King/Cal King

  • Care: Machine-washable

12. Layla Down Alternative Comforter: Fluffy and Cozy

Down alternative material is more affordable, hypoallergenic, and eco-conscious than down. I find the down alternative generally more comfortable since it’s loftier, softer, and durable -- also, these comforters tend to lose less filling over time. The Layla Comforter is an ideal fluffy, down alternative bedding you can throw right into the wash.

Layla’s outside shell is 100% cotton, immediately giving it a soft feel. Unlike traditional down covers, these comforters feel like your favorite lightweight cotton sheets. The inside is filled with clusters of satiny and fluffy microfibers. It has a baffle box stitch construction in the shape of puffy octagons.

This keeps the filling from bunching in the corners. This comforter is a little heavier than the others tested, so we wouldn't recommend it to hot sleepers or for hot summer nights. It's perfect for cozying up the rest of the year.

You’ll like to use this comforter to cover white bedding so dogs can snuggle up with you. While it has upheld too many washes to count, the color has faded over time.

Pros:

  • Fluffy and comfortable

  • Down alternative is more affordable and hypoallergenic

  • Baffle box stitch keeps fill in place

Cons:

  • Only available in white and a light gray

  • Threading pulls and color fades after many, many washes

Additional details:

  • Fill: Down alternative

  • Shell material: 100% cotton

  • Sizes: Twin/Twin XL, Full/Queen, King/Cal King

  • Care: Machine-washable

13. The Company Store Company Cotton Rayon Made From Bamboo Sateen Comforter: Great for Hot Sleepers

Sweaty sleepers might find bamboo exceptionally comfortable because it tends to be more breathable than cotton or synthetic materials. Devin Shaffer, Decorilla’s lead sales designer, recommends this bamboo comforter from Company Store and uses it quite a bit in his projects. Shaffer is a fan of bamboo linens for their smooth texture and excellent temperature-regulation properties, which are also true of this comforter.

Climate Control

“Its cotton and bamboo combination is the secret to maintaining the perfect ‘under the covers’ climate,” he says. Filled with polyester, it comes in six colors. “The hottest colors are misty blue and tarragon, which fall into the Danish pastel color palette that’s in high demand,” Shaffer says. It can be used with or without a duvet cover.

  • Filling: Down alternative (polyester)

  • Shell: Bamboo, rayon, and combed cotton-sateen blend

  • Weight: Medium

  • Care: Machine washable

14. Pottery Barn Sleepsmart 37.5 Technology Temperature Regulating 550FP Down Blend

While Laine likes Brooklinen’s comforter as a solid everyday option for most folks, she uses this temperature-regulating down duvet insert from Pottery Barn at her inn and rental cottage. It’s made mostly of down but blended with a unique fiber that helps keep sleepers comfortable in both cool and warm temperatures.

“Our inn and cottage have 100-plus-year-old radiator heat, which sometimes works too well, so we switched to temperature regulating down duvets,” she says. “It has the nice fluff and weight of a classic down duvet, but on cold upstate nights when the radiator is really cranking, you won’t wake up sweaty.”

Material Blend

The insert’s shell is made of the same blend for added temperature regulation. If you want to cop the look (and feel) of the bed and breakfast’s setup, Laine covers their duvets in Morrow’s linen duvet cover, which she calls “great-looking, soft, and breathable.”

  • Filling: 550 fill power white down and 37.5 fiber

  • Shell: Cotton and polyester

  • Weight: Medium

  • Care: Machine washable

15. Dewoolfson Cambric Down Comforter: Sumptuous European Luxury

For a truly luxurious sleeping experience, consider this European goose-filled down comforter Strianese discovered a few years ago when she stayed at a luxury hotel in Sweden. “I called the hotel a month after we returned to find out the maker so I could purchase one,” she says.

Dewoolfson’s high-end, authentic white-goose-down comforters are expensive, but they cost far less than those made by high-end brands like Frette and Matouk, which cost upwards of a couple thousand dollars each. Strianese likens the experience of slumbering underneath hers to “sleeping under meringue.”

Weight Options

It’s covered in a tightly woven chambray-like fabric to minimize feather leakage. It comes in five different weights, including the lightest, “Florida Light,” and the heaviest, “Canadian Winter.”

  • Filling: 650 to 750 fill power European white goose down

  • Shell: Cambric cotton

  • Weight: Five weights

  • Care: Machine washable

How to Choose the Best Fluffy Comforter

Down vs. Down-Alternative: Which Comforter Fill Is Right for You?

When you start shopping for a new comforter, you’ll want to pay attention to its fill material. Comforters are categorized by their filling, and you can mostly break them into two types:

  • Down

  • Down-alternative

Down Types

Down is the ultra-soft feathers found underneath the main feathers of a goose or duck. Down comforters are known for being warm, durable, and luxurious, but they often can’t be machine-washed and may require dry cleaning. For the highest quality down comforters, look for 100 percent goose-down filling.

Duck down is the next best choice. It has smaller clusters but similar insulation and comfort. If you want a more budget-friendly option, you can opt for a comforter filled with a blend of down and feathers, such as those filled predominantly with duck down. These will keep you plenty warm at night but also have feathers for added structure.

Alternative Fills

The term down-alternative is relatively new and broadly encapsulates non-down-fill materials. Unlike down comforters, down-alternative comforters are hypoallergenic. You’ll find synthetic and natural fill materials within this category, and the differences between materials can vastly affect the look, feel, and price point.

Synthetic fill comforters generally offer a more budget-friendly option and are known for their ease of cleaning compared to traditional down-filled comforters. Natural fill comforters contain materials like:

  • Cotton

  • Bamboo

  • Silk

Alternative Popularity

They’re becoming increasingly popular because they’re just as durable and insulating as real down and, depending on the material, may have a similar price point to down comforters.

Fluff Factor: Understanding Comforter Loft

Also known as fill power, a comforter’s loft indicates the amount of space one ounce of filling takes up. Used mainly as a metric for down comforters and not down-alternative comforters, a higher loft can correlate with a fluffier, more insulated comforter.

If you like something lightweight, a fill power below 500 will suffice. If you’re looking for a year-round option, choose a comforter with a loft of around 500. If you’re looking for something even warmer, opt for a product with an even higher loft.

Guaranteed Warmth: How Is the Filling Distributed?

A comforter with evenly distributed filling will ensure you stay warm no matter how aggressively you toss and turn at night. Two main types of stitching keep filling evenly distributed:

Sewn-through comforters have a simple design. The top and bottom layers are stitched to one another across the surface of the comforter, which may also be referred to as a box stitch. They tend to be less lofty, and a thin shell material can allow cold air to seep through the seams.

Baffle Design

With a baffle-box construction, strips of fabric are sewn between the shell's top and bottom layers to create three-dimensional boxed compartments.

Consider the Shell Material

Even though your comforter will likely be used with a duvet cover, choosing a high-quality shell guarantees long-term durability. Look for shells made from natural materials, which are breathable and moisture-wicking.

Cotton, eucalyptus, bamboo, and silk fabrics are comfortable and durable options that will help you stay cool throughout the seasons. Almost all of the comforters on our list are made with natural materials.
