What are the 5 Elements of a Hotel-Quality Bed?

Hotel beds are notorious for striking a balance between plush and firm. If you've stayed in a fancy hotel, chances are, you've caught some of your best sleep there, something that doesn't happen by accident. Hospitality experts design mattresses and bedding sets to appeal to the masses, optimizing comfort for a restful experience.

The good news is that you can replicate this formula on your bed for a luxurious sleeping experience every night. We'll walk you through the elements of a high-quality hotel bed (the right bedding is key) and show you how to make a bed like a hotel, every time.

1. The Cloud-Like Duvet: A Staple of Hotel-Quality Comfort

Four and five-star hotel beds almost always have one component in common: an extravagantly fluffy duvet. The duvet insert is typically hypoallergenic down, which manufacturers clean extensively to limit the allergy-inducing animal byproducts present. To really make your bed look and feel like the epitome of luxury, opt for two down inserts instead of one.

2. The Quality Mattress: The Foundation of a Comfortable Bed

It's essential to start with a solid foundation; in this case, that's your mattress. A hotel-quality mattress typically has a medium firmness level, supporting your spine and neck as you sleep without sacrificing comfort.

Depending on your mattress material, replacing it every five to ten years is best. However, if it's causing discomfort or you notice a hollowed-out spot where you sleep, you might need to replace it sooner.

3. The Mattress Topper and Featherbed: Extra Elements of Comfort

Consider a high-quality mattress topper if a new mattress isn't in the budget (or you just want to add an extra luxe touch). Hotel beds with even the most comfortable mattresses usually still feature a plush mattress topper.

Lay down a featherbed before putting on your sheets to create the ultimate luxurious experience. A featherbed will support your body's pressure points more, but look for one filled with allergen-free duck feathers to avoid sensitivities.

4. Soft and Breathable Sheets: The Unsung Hero of Bed Comfort

Most high-end hotels don't skimp on thread count or sheet material. Since synthetic materials like polyester are less breathable than natural fibers, hotel sheets are often made of cotton (specifically Egyptian cotton) with a thread count ranging from 200 to 800.

To replicate the buttery soft feeling of five-star hotel bedding, look for cotton, linen, or bamboo sheets with thread counts in this same range. As far as a bottom sheet goes, hotels frequently tuck a flat sheet tightly around the mattress rather than using a fitted sheet. The extra seams in fitted sheets make them less durable, not to mention that they are harder to iron and fold.

5. Plush Pillows: The Finishing Touch to Your Hotel-Style Bed

Good pillows are just as important as a quality mattress. Hotel pillows have a medium firmness level, just like hotel mattresses. For your pillowcases, skip the decorative shams and choose a set that matches your sheets.

Add a few ornamental throw pillows to the mix, but keep it minimal with a maximum of three pillows. Two oversized Euro pillows to hide your sleeping pillows and one smaller throw pillow in the middle should do the trick.

How to Make Your Bed Like a Hotel

Quality bedding may make your bed feel as opulent as one at a hotel, but your bed-making technique will make it look the part. Plus, there's nothing quite like climbing into a perfectly-made bed at the end of the day.

As Goldilocks will tell you, there’s nothing better than a bed that’s made just right, but for some people, accomplishing that feels far more like a fairy tale than reality. Making the bed, while important, can be a real challenge.

In her book The Perfectly Imperfect Home: How to Decorate & Live Well, author Deborah Needleman explains that our bedroom “is our most private space, and it should be arranged to take care of us, rather than just be a crash pad or an over-programmed home office/exercise room/storage dump.”

It’s easy to forget that the space's primary purpose is to act as our own personal sanctuary, and making it a respite that encourages relaxation is essential. “This is the room in which to indulge yourself. I don’t believe in skimping on the bed or its linens, quilts, and pillows. A beautifully made bed can make us happy,” Needleman writes.

1. Demystify the Duvet: Get Cozy and Comfy Without the Tuck

When it comes to creating that perfect hotel bed at home, the duvet is key. In an Auberge bed, the duvet is never tucked in. Instead, it sits atop the bed like a cozy cloud, ready to envelop you in softness at a moment’s notice. “The middle sheet does not tuck into the bed and has to be shorter in width than the bottom sheet,” explains Tom Donovan, general manager of Wildflower Farms, Auberge Resorts Collection. “This ensures the middle sheet does not hang below duvet cover and so everything is perfectly creased.”

The duvet and all of the elements are masterfully curated and thoughtfully layered to ensure everything always looks as it should. Ensure that the duvet and the middle sheet remain untucked to ensure that the bed is inviting and easy to slip into. He reveals that this technique “takes extra training for housekeeping, but looks exquisite and perfect.” Most hotels use extra fluffy down or down-alternative comforters, occasionally with a duvet cover on top.

2. Splurge on High-Quality Bedding for the Softest Touch

Once you've demystified the duvet, it’s time to focus on the sheets. Donovan shares that the sheets at Wildflower Farms are 400 thread count and made out of luxurious pima cotton from India.

Choosing a high-quality cotton like pima ensures you'll have a longer-lasting, more sustainable sheet. “The sheets have an unexpected sateen weave and finish and are also cooling,” he reveals. When it comes to cotton sheets, the highest thread count is typically 400. You can find other materials claiming to have a higher thread count, but this is an essential factor to consider when selecting.

3. Forego Your Fitted Sheet

To get that luxury hotel bed feeling, you'll need to say farewell to your bottom-fitted sheet. Donovan explains that you need to use a flat sheet to reduce wrinkles and mysterious scrunches in your sheets. Oddly enough, this loose layer carefully fashioned along the mattress is essential to making a bed that could pass military inspection, as Admiral William H. McRaven shares in his book “Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life.”

The folds and elastic of a fitted sheet add unwanted wrinkles and extra bulk to the sides of your bed, which goes against military and luxury hotel protocol. Instead, a flat sheet carefully tucked in with folded hospital corners ensures a more streamlined, sleek look that you want to make your bed feel truly luxurious. Meet every standard and get the pristine look your oasis demands with this simple, yet effective switch.

4. Iron Your Sheets (Optional): Create a Smooth Finish

You won't find wrinkly sheets at a luxury hotel. It might feel extravagant or unnecessary, but ironing your sheets before you fold them or put them on the bed is a nice extra step. Ironing makes your sheets feel softer since it smooths out the fibers.

5. Put Sheets on the Bed the Right Way

If you've opted for a flat sheet instead of a fitted one, you'll need to pay extra attention to folding the corners neatly.

  • Start in one corner, and use the hospital corners folding technique.

  • Tuck the neighboring sides in as tightly as possible, and smooth out any wrinkles.

  • Follow the same steps for fitted sheets, just without the hospital corners.

  • Add the top sheet.

  • Lay it over the mattress, and fold the top 18 inches back over the rest of the sheet.

  • Tuck the sides extra tight and apply hospital corners to the bottom.

6. Add the Duvet for a Touch of Elegance

Spread your duvet over the top of your bed, ensuring it's even on both sides. Pull the top of the duvet down about twenty inches, the length of a typical bed pillow.

7. Fluff the Pillows for a Luxurious Finish

To finish making the bed, lay your sleeping pillows flat at the head of the bed. Most hotel beds feature four sleeper pillows stacked flat in pairs of two on either side, but this step isn't necessary if you won't use that many pillows for sleeping.

Then, prop up two decorative throw pillows in front of your sleeping pillows. For the ultimate hotel experience, fluff your pillows each time you make bed. Toss them in the dryer with a few tennis balls or wool dryer balls to give them a good recharge.

8. Take Inspiration from Your Surroundings

While there are some strict standards when it comes to actually making your bed, the embellishments are up to interpretation. “The design for the guest rooms at Wildflower Farms is influenced by early American design movements and craft, including quilting,” shares Staver Gray, co-founder of Ward + Gray.

This design studio partnered with the hotel on this project. “We made the custom throw for the bed inspired by vintage quilts we spotted antiquing in the area. They add an unexpected pop of color and texture to the otherwise classic, luxury bed.” Add touches of your style or heritage to your bed to allow it to be a place you are proud of. An accent of a colorful throw pillow or maybe a quilt from a family member should be a welcome addition to your space and allow you to make your bed so it's just right.

9. Keep Your Bedding Crisp and Clean

Almost every hotel has one thing in common: white bedding. Somehow, they manage to keep it crisp and clean (which is mind-blowing, considering you can’t even figure out how to keep a white T-shirt fresh).

But lucky for you, you just need to know a few laundry tricks to keep your bedding looking similarly brand-new. As you would with any clothing you want to keep in tip-top shape, always follow the care instructions on the tag. You should wash white bedding in hot water for a thorough cleaning. Use oxygen bleach or baking soda to keep it as bright white as possible.
